An 83-year-old woman known by her family as ‘Lazarus’ has beaten Covid-19, as her daughter praised the amazing staff at Southport Hospital who helped to save her life as ‘worth their weight in gold’.
Sheila Marshall is now recovering from her ordeal as her family look to bring her back home.
Her daughter, Tracy Haskayne, said: “My sister-in-law calls her Lazarus. She had brain surgery when she was 19 and has had many operations for different things over the years and she is still here at 83. Dad died in 2011 and we didn’t think she would last long after that but she has proved us wrong.”
Sheila’s ordeal began when paramedics took her into hospital.
Tracy said: “My mum has mixed dementia. She was taken by ambulance on 22nd January to Southport Hospital A&E as she was non-responsive. The Critical and Intensive Care teams looked after her, Mum fought and recovered. It was found that Mum had pneumonia. She was moved to different wards during her stay.

“I was waiting for her to be discharged home but we were told that Mum had tested positive for Covid -19.
“I was so worried but remembered my Mum is strong and fortunately was classed as asymptomatic.
“She is now in a care home as an assessment can’t be done yet to see if she can come home to be with me. She can’t weight-bear as she spent too long in bed.
“I went to see her yesterday and had a chat through the window. I’m pleased to report she looks well!”
Tracy is grateful to the medical and nursing staff who cared for her Mum so well.

She said: “My family and I are so grateful for the staff at Southport Hospital. Especially the critical care team and staff on Ward 15B.
“They looked after me as well as Mum and they are worth their weight in gold.
“Thank you also to Dr O’Hara from Cumberland House Surgery who came out to see Mum and got her swiftly into hospital.”
Many people in Southport will be delighted to hear that Sheila is on the mend.
Tracy said: “People will know my Dad, Keith Marshall, from Bury Road Barbers. Mum worked in a glove factory in Southport when she was younger, must have been 60 years ago, but gave up work when my brother then I came along.
“We used to go to Birkdale Labour Club and Mum attended Metfield Day Centre twice a week before she became ill.”
