The Aldi store at Meols Cop in Southport

Aldi supermarket in Southport has postponed its planned refurbishment so it can serve shoppers during the Coronavirus outbreak.

The store at Meols Cop retail park was due to close for a transformation on March 22.

But the firm has instead postponed any changes to ensure that its customers can have access to the essential products they need.

The news was welcome by shoppers in Southport.

Speaking on the firm’s Facebook page, Amanda Mitchell said: “The staff team are doing a fantastic job. Working extra hours and maintaining the high standards that we always get at the Meols Cop store.

“Despite the challenges they face on a daily basis with the Covid 19 outbreak they act in a friendly professional manner. Keep up the good work.”

Rosie Barton said: “I love our store. The staff are great and so approachable. Nothing is too much trouble if you can’t find what you want. I’m so thankful for how hard they work and grateful for all they are doing in these troubled times.

“Big shout out of thanks to all the crew! You are amazing.”

Jen Wilson said: “Meols Cop Aldi staff have been brilliant from the beginning. They deserve medals. Thank you all.”

Given current circumstances, daily opening hours at Aldi in Southport have been  shortened slightly. The store now closed at 8pm to allow time for product replenishment and to give additional support to store colleagues. Sunday opening hours remain unchanged.

An Aldi spokesman said: “Please shop individually wherever possible. In order to help with social distancing, we are encouraging all customers to try and reduce the number of family members they bring with them into our stores.”

All day, every day key workers in the NHS, police and fire service will take priority ahead of queues in Aldi stores upon showing valid ID.

This is in addition to early access on Sundays, where they can enter stores 30 minutes prior to opening.
