People are being invited to send a letter to loved ones while they are treated in Southport Hospital

People are being invited to send a “letter to loved ones” while they are being treated  in hospital in Southport and Ormskirk.

Southport Hospital and Ormskirk Hospital restricted visiting last week to all but exceptional circumstances in line with NHS advice to protect against Covid-19 (coronavirus).

Emails sent to soh-tr.lettertolovedones@nhs.net will be printed off, put in a specially stamped envelope and delivered to the patient.

“Letter to loved ones” is part of a package of measures to prevent patients becoming isolated during their hospital stay.

Each ward now has its own patient information and communication officer whose job is to liaise between patients and their loved ones.

The service runs seven days a week and provides a designated family or friend with an update on the patient’s progress where they are unable to make this contact themselves.

The liaison officers are supported by a call centre, using redeployed staff, who are the single point of contact for patients’ relatives, carers and families, taking pressure off ward staff.

The call centre number is 01704 704835 or 704836.

The team is also launching an activity schedule, including movies, music and games. They will also be organising video calling for patients who want it.

Bridget Lees, Director of Nursing, Midwifery and Therapies, said: “This is a difficult time for both patients and families while we have to restrict visiting.

“That is why we are making this special effort to keep families in touch with their loved ones and make their hospital stay as pleasant as possible.”
