The Imperial pub in Southport
By PadThaiPaul
en at the long-standing, food-led Imperial pub in Southport for over a year, my brother and I thought it time to re-visit it for an early-evening meal.
Owned by Manchester brewer Joseph Holt, the building is attractive both outside and inside.
With a friendly welcome and efficient service, this pub ticks many boxes.
The menu is wide, tempting and well laid out although we noticed that many prices had increased since our last visit.
Scampi, Chips & peas at £9.25 & Chicken & Ham pie, mash & peas at £9.50 for example, struck us as being high-end prices for what effectively is “pub food”.

Slightly daunted by such prices, we selected from the limited choice of “2 for £13” meals which are dotted around the menu.
We both had the Classic Beef burger, served with chips & coleslaw (normally £8.75)
And we traded up with an extra buttermilk chicken fillet (plus £1.95) and swopped our chips for sweet potato fries (for an additional £1)
So the total we paid was £9.45 each.
Still not cheap even on a deal, but we had effectively ordered a double burger.
And the verdict: the meal was excellent and extremely enjoyable.

The beef burger was moist, tender and tasty, the chicken fillet was crisp & crunchy, the bun was excellent, the coleslaw just perfect and the sweet potato fries were truly delicious.

So all in all we felt our particular selection to be fair value for money.
You order food & drinks at the bar, pay and your meal will be served to your table.
It all worked very well and the service staff were friendly, polite and professional.
An enjoyable experience and we will be returning.
Note: there is plenty of parking outside on the main road if the pub car park is full.
PRO TIP: Mondays are “get 2 for the price of 1” on most main meals, but the venue gets very busy.
