People in Southport are being asked to help cheer up residents in local care care homes during the coronavirus lockdown.
Older people living in homes are missing seeing their family and friends regularly while Covid-19 restrictions are in place. It is proving a particularly distressing time for some of the residents who are not seeing their loved ones.
Through its new #ShowThemYouCare campaign, Sefton Council is asking local people to purchase items, such as packets of biscuits, boxes of cakes and sweets and flowers, plants and treats, and donate them to brighten up the day for the people living in local residential homes. Also, paintings drawings, poems and letters from local children and neighbours would really cheer up residents.
Cllr Paul Cummins, Sefton Council’s Cabinet Member for Adult Social Care said: “The need for us all to socially isolate to prevent the spread of COVID-19 is vital but it is having this unseen impact for residents in residential homes right across Sefton.

“I would urge anyone who can to brighten up these older and sometimes vulnerable people’s lives by dropping off a little gift.
“We want people to #ShowThemYouCare but we want them to do it locally. If you have older relatives living in residential care but they are in another part of the Borough, you can donate to your local home in the knowledge that someone else is donating locally where they live.
“When you are shopping, you could buy a cake or some sweets or if you’re worried about keeping fit during this period of enforced inactivity and want to get rid of that spare packet of biscuits, donate it to their local residential home.”
People wanting to leave gifts can drop them off at the door during their daily exercise. Details of other care homes across Sefton where people may want to leave gifts for residents can be found here.
Cllr Cummins said: “I would hope that through #ShowThemYouCare we can repeat the success of the Council’s recent #SeftonSaysThanks campaign, which has seen pupils across the borough making ‘Thank you’ cards for their favourite teachers and teaching assistants.
“#SeftonSaysThanks has celebrated the amazing job teaching staff are doing continuing to work in schools across the borough, teaching vulnerable children and children of key workers.”
Children are being asked to paint or draw ‘Thank you’ cards, including special messages to their teachers, and send photographs of them to the Council communications team, which is then sharing them on social media.
