Volunteers at Meols Cop High School in Southport are making PPE safety vsiors for care home staff in Southport

Schools in Southport are using their equipment to make visors and other PPE equipment for care homes across our town.

The number of patients with Covid-19 who have died at Southport Hospital and Ormskirk Hospital yesterday rose to 62. The total number of confirmed coronavirus cases in Sefton is now 532, with 939 in Liverpool and 1,692 in Lancashire.

The rising figures have prompted calls for all health staff, care workers and other key workers to be provided with vital PPE safety equipment urgently to protect them and their patients against coronavirus.

A huge community effort has seen volunteers working hard at local schools to do what they can to produce the equipment needed.

Mark Brownett at Meols Cop High School, said: “We are now producing masks for our local nursing homes, 300 delivered so far. We are now operating our laser printer to produce as many as possible.

“We are operating our laser printers and we are also exploring utilising the 3D printers.

“We have a rota of staff volunteers who are operating it from 7am until 10pm each day. We are going to run out of 1mm polypropylene soon, please let us know if any has any spare that we can use.

“A number of schools across the region are working on this and it is a fantastic effort by everyone.”

Mr Brownett says staff at care homes in our town have been delighted to receive the life-saving visors.

He said: “They have been blown away! We have had some tears, they have been hugely grateful.”
