Who in their right minds would launch a new website during a Coronavirus pandemic?

Stand Up For Southport would – because it is no ordinary website.

It was originally set up as a grassroots community campaign, led by local residents Andrew Brown and Phil Gee, to bring some much-needed positivity to Southport and encourage people to talk up our wonderful town.

The numbers were incredible. We already have more than 7,000 members on our Facebook group alone, with thousands more on our Twitter, Instagram and LinkedIn accounts. We are all proud of where we live.

At the time, Southport was planning to bid for up to £25million in Town Deal funding, while huge investment was being made in areas including Southport Pleasureland and Bliss Hotel / The Waterfront.

Now Coronavirus and Covid-19 are here, there is a need for a Stand Up For Southport website more than ever.

Coronavirus: Supermarket hosts special elderly shopping morning

You won’t find much crime, grime or clickbait here. We want instead to be able to support everyone living, working or visiting the Southport area in a positive way.

We have a dedicated Coronavirus category on our website, so you can see all the latest news about how the outbreak is affecting us all locally. And more importantly, how we can all help each other through it, and what official support is available, from trusted sources.

We have a Business category, as we urge everyone to do all you can to support our local businesses wherever you can.

And as a community website, we have a Guest Blog section. Would you like to write something about an aspect of life in Southport? Do you write for an organisation or charity in our town which would like to feature? Please email me: mediaandrewbrown@gmail.com

Cinema vows to return after closure amidst Coronavirus outbreak

In these troubled times, let’s also do what we can to make people smile. In the light of the new restrictions put in place yesterday, we don’t want the required physical isolation to become social isolation.

Please invite your friends into our Stand Up For Southport Facebook group or other SUFS social media accounts. Please keep posting your stunning pictures of Sunny Southport! Please help us to highlight the heroes and heroines and the great #BeKind deeds being done locally. Please keep joining in with the conversation to help make Southport a better, friendlier, and less isolated place.

Together, we will get through this!
