Sefton Council elections due to take place this May have been cancelled due to the Coronavirus outbreak.
A total of 22 councillors – a third of the authority – were due to stand for election on Thursday, May 7.
Elections were also due to be held on the same day for the Liverpool City Region Metro Mayor and for the Merseyside Police Crime Commissioner.
Dwayne Johnson, Returning Officer for Sefton Council, said: “Following the announcement from Central Government, we can confirm that local, metro mayor and PCC elections in Sefton will not go ahead on May 7 as previously planned.

“We support this decision and those in office who were up for election in 2020 will now continue in their current roles until 2021.”
It follows yesterday’s announcement from Prime Minister Boris Johnson which set out drastic new restrictions on people’s movements in a bid to contain the Coronavirus and the Cov-19 disease, which includes urging people to maintain physical distances, avoid non-essential travel, and stay clear of pubs, restaurants and large gatherings.
