Hundreds of rainbows have been appearing across Southport as defiant symbols of hope against the deadly Coronavirus pandemic.

A huge rainbow arch made from balloons has appeared outside a hotel in Southport town centre; balloon pictures decorate the walls at Southport Hospital; balloon pictures drawn by children of emergency workers who are still going to school are now proudly displayed inside Southport police cars.

At the end of a fierce storm, a rainbow often appears – they offer hope of better times to come, this time in our collective fight against Covid-19. A huge Rainbow made with hundreds of colourful balloons has been created outside a hotel to pay tribute to workers in the NHS fighting Coronavirus.

The incredible tribute to our NHS heroes was created by Anthony Duffey, owner of the Sunnyside Hotel on Bath Street in Southport.

Anthony Duffey said: “My sister, Maria, is working in a London Hospital in the fight against Covid-19 and other members of the family have been trying to provide support in the fight against the virus.

“My mother and sisters have registered as volunteers and my partner, Larissa De Bastos Del-Tetto, has been on the sewing machine making surgical masks.”

A giant rainbow banner has appeared at Southport’s busiest roundabout, as a way of saying thank you to our amazing NHS workers.

The 6ft-high rainbow banner, flanked by love hearts, is situated near to another banner proclaiming ‘Love The NHS’.

The signs are situated on fences along the B&Q superstore on New Foul Lane, by Kew roundabout, not far away from Southport & Formby District General Hospital.

Tracy Nunn, who took the photo, said: “As an NHS key worker I cannot say how much I really appreciated seeing this at B&Q Meols Cop this morning!”

School children make rainbows for police cars

Schools across Southport have been staying open during the Coronavirus crisis, to provide lessons for children of essential workers and key workers in our town.

Many of them have been busy drawing, or painting rainbows, as symbols of hope. Among them are the talented children at Norwood Primary School in Southport, who drew rainbow pictures which now adorn patrol cars driven by Southport police officers.

Southport artist and games designer Will Thompson has created a special tribute to the cult kids TV show in the window of his home. Something guaranteed to make children – and adults – smile.

K Fodens Newsagents on Preston New Road in Churchtown are famous for their party balloons.

Staff have now used their skills to create a large, colourful rainbow balloon arch in the window of their shop, with a teddy bear sitting proudly in the centre.

The rainbows have been created for those who work in the NHS – at Southport Hospital, Ormskirk Hospital, at GP surgeries in our town, and other health workers. But they also recognise our key workers too.

Who said fairy lights were just for Christmas?

Debbie Harwood said: “We have put Christmas rainbow lights on our windows and made rainbows to brighten this dark time.

“These are our rainbow for hope. I think we all need a little hope in our hearts now…

“This will finish and we will get through.

“We have such lovely neighbours. Some alone, and the ones that are we gave them our mobile number if they need anything we can help them with.

“We put Christmas lights just to cheer anyone up in these dark times.

“I painted the rainbows and Andrew, my husband, put the lights up. If we made one person smile it was worth it!”
