Sienna Aldred from Southport is running the equivalent of a marathon to raise money for the NHS

A Southport schoolgirl is making a marathon effort to raise money for the NHS.

Sienna Aldred, a pupil at Farnborough Road Junior School in Birkdale, has just turned nine years old.

But she has pledged to run the equivalent of a marathon – 26.2 miles – in order to raise money for the Southport & Ormskirk Hospital NHS Trust Charitable Fund.

The brave youngster says she wants to “help the NHS stay strong and fight Covid” after feeling “scared” about what she had seen about the devastating impact of the illness in the news.

Sienna is carrying out her fundraising mission between May 1 and May 31, and only has 15.8 miles to go!

She has already raised £550 for her local hospitals despite her Mum, Fiona, saying “she absolutely hates running, it’s not her thing!”

The brave youngster said: “I have been quite scared lately about what I have been seeing and hearing on the news about Covid-19. I want to help and so I had this idea!

“I wondered if I could help raise money for my local hospital trust to help them save the lives of the people in our community suffering with Covid-19. I also want to help the staff get the equipment they need.

“I asked my Mum, who likes to run, how far a marathon is… it can’t be that hard if loads of people do it right?

“I thought maybe I could run a marathon to help raise some money. She told me it’s 26.2 miles! “So we went for a little run around our block to see how far it was so I could compare it to a marathon…. it was only 0.7 miles and I was really out of breath! 26.2 miles is REALLY far!

“So my mum suggested we do 26.2 miles but in small segments. So that’s what I am going to do!

“I am going to complete 26.2 miles starting from May 1st and ending on May 31st. I will keep a diary on my Mum’s Facebook page and let you know how I am getting on.

“Please help me raise some money for our local NHS trust, Southport and Ormskirk. “
