Harry Wareing is cycling 200 miles during the coronavirus lockdown in May for Southport Hospital ICU

An inspirational Southport schoolboy is aiming to cycle 200 miles during May to raise vital funds for the Intensive Care Unit (ICU Unit) at Southport Hospital.

Harry Wareing, a pupil at Farnborough Road Junior School in Birkdale, has already raised over £700 from over 50 well-wishers in his bid to “give something back to the NHS”.

The 11-year-old is enjoying taking his bike out for exercise each day as he missed playing his favourite sport with his friends.

He said: “As I love sports especially football and can’t get out during this difficult time, I would like  to complete 200 miles on my bike during the month of May, utilising my daily exercise advised by the Government.

“All the money I raise I would like to go to the staff directly to say a massive thank you for everything they do and are doing, rather than just a clap each week.

“However, as I can’t do this the money I donate will go to the ICU Southport to buy equipment to make patients’ stay more comfortable, as something as small as a radio or a fan will make a difference to their stay.

“The reason I chose Southport Intensive Care Unit is because some of my parents’ friends work there and not only do they are all doing an amazing job on the front line for the NHS in Southport Hospital they have cared for some of my family and friends in the past.

“I appreciate any donations received and look forward to completing the challenge I’ve set.

“Thank you in advance and stay safe.”
