Harry Wareing is cycling 200 miles during the coronavirus lockdown in May for Southport Hospital ICU

A kind-hearted schoolboy determined to cycle 200 miles during May to raise money for the Intensive Care Unit (ICU Unit) at Southport Hospital has already raised over £1,000!

Determined youngster Harry Wareing started his mission three weeks ago and has since attracted the backing of 75 well-wishers who have kindly donated £1,042.

The 11-year-old pupil at Farnborough Road Junior School in Birkdale said he began cycling while fundraising so he can “give something back to the NHS”.

His proud Mum Lou Wareing said: “He has only gone and smashed £1,000!

“Thank you to each and everyone one you for every penny donated.

“Harry cannot believe the amount he has raised and cannot thank each and everyone of you for donations and support, he is just gobsmacked.

“We still have 61 miles to go, hopefully out again on Saturday but if not, a long one Sunday but he is not giving up……

“Every Thursday he rushes me to be out on time for the NHS clap. It means so much to him.”

Harry is enjoying taking his bike out for exercise each day as he missed playing his favourite sport with his friends.

He said: “As I love sports especially football and can’t get out during this difficult time, I would like  to complete 200 miles on my bike during the month of May, utilising my daily exercise advised by the Government.

“All the money I raise I would like to go to the staff directly to say a massive thank you for everything they do and are doing, rather than just a clap each week.

“However, as I can’t do this the money I donate will go to the ICU Southport to buy equipment to make patients’ stay more comfortable, as something as small as a radio or a fan will make a difference to their stay.

“The reason I chose Southport Intensive Care Unit is because some of my parents’ friends work there and not only do they are all doing an amazing job on the front line for the NHS in Southport Hospital they have cared for some of my family and friends in the past.

“I appreciate any donations received and look forward to completing the challenge.”
